Visa Requirements

Requirements for Onshore Skilled Nomination for Recent Graduates or holders of Graduate Skilled Subclass 485 visa who have not studied in the Northern Territory

Sponsorship for the Skilled Regional Sponsored Subclass 487 or 475 visas will be considered for:

  • international graduates who have completed less than two years of study in the Northern Territory
  • holders of Subclass 485 visas who completed their studies in another Australian state.

Exceptional circumstances may be considered.


As at 11 February 2010, the Northern Territory Government requires all graduates or holders of Graduate Skilled visas who are graduates from an interstate Australian university or tertiary institution to include in their application for nomination for the Skilled Sponsored and Skilled-Regional Sponsored visas:

  • evidence of a minimum of six months employment in the Territory in their nominated occupation or a closely related skilled occupation relevant to their Australian qualification
  • a valid employment contract from a Northern Territory employer that details the terms and conditions of employment (conditions must comply with Australian industrial relation requirements)
  • evidence of residency in the Northern Territory (eg residential tenancy agreement, utility accounts, vehicle registration papers).

The Department of Business and Employment may ask applicants to attend the office in person prior to completing assessment of sponsorship.


From the close of business Wednesday 3 June 2009 Northern Territory nomination applications for the Skilled-Sponsored and Skilled-Regional Sponsored visas where the applicant is a recent graduate from an Australian tertiary institution only those applications from recent graduates who have studied at a relevant tertiary institution in the Northern Territory, and completed an eligible minimum two year course of study will be accepted.


Effective from Thursday 26 March 2009, applications from interstate recent graduates for Northern Territory Government nomination under the Skilled-Sponsored Visa or the Skilled-Regional Sponsored Visa will no longer be accepted in the following nominated occupations:

  • 2211 - 11 Accountant
  • 2299 - 79 Business and Information Professional (nec)
  • 2221 - 13 Marketing Specialist

From 1 January 2009 the Northern Territory Government requires all graduates from Interstate Universities and Tertiary Institutions who are seeking nomination for the Onshore Skilled Sponsored Visa to show verifiable evidence of a genuine intention to move to, live and work in the Northern Territory.

This evidence could take the form of:

  • a verifiable employment offer in a skilled occupation related to their qualification; or
  • strong linkages to the Northern Territory.

The Department of Business and Employment will confirm its nomination to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship - Adelaide Skilled Processing Centre only after graduates have attended the office in person and presented their passport and a minimum of two pieces of evidence of residency eg. Northern Territory drivers licence, vehicle registration papers, residential tenancy agreement, Northern Territory library card, utility accounts etc.
