A general skilled migration visa option is explained below.

Skilled - Independent (Permanent) (Subclass 189) visa

This points-tested visa is for skilled overseas citizens who are not sponsored by an employer, a state or territory, or a family member.

All overseas citizens wishing to apply for this visa must lodge an Expression of Interest in the Department of Immigration and Citizenship's SkillSelect.

Skilled - Independent (Residence) (Subclass 885) visa

This visa allows overseas students who have completed their course studies in the last six months in Australia and holders of certain temporary visas to apply for permanent residency. This is a points tested visa that does not require applicants to have state or territory government sponsorship.
