Our Regions - Darwin

Darwin, the tropical capital city of Australia's Northern Territory, is modern and cosmopolitan. Wide streets and shady parks, a pedestrian mall, a huge range of restaurants and nightlife, exciting tourist venues and upmarket waterside developments including Darwin's new city waterfront redevelopment project, complete the picture.

The city of Palmerston, 15 minutes' drive south-east of Darwin, is one of the fastest-growing parts of Australia. Further south is the shire of Litchfield, where residents enjoy the freedom of large blocks of land and a rural lifestyle.

Darwin is an administrative centre, with Federal, Territory and local governments together employing about 32 per cent of the total workforce. More than half the private sector is engaged in wholesale or retail trading, with a strong focus on tourism.

The year-round warm climate encourages an active outdoor lifestyle, the most popular recreational pursuit being fishing in Darwin's huge harbour and beyond, or the many river systems rich with sought-after fish species. Parklands and coastal areas throughout the suburbs and the city offer a range of venues for walking, cycling, family outings and community gatherings.

There is generally a good range of houses, units, townhouses and flats available for sale or rent, with a reasonable choice in the city, the suburbs and at nearby Palmerston. Land is limited in the Darwin area, but is readily available in the Palmerston and rural area. There are 35 government and non-government primary and pre-schools in the Darwin area, located centrally in most suburbs.

Darwin has more than 70 ethnic groups, the largest being the Greek community. The Chinese, Italian, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Filipino and Timorese/Portuguese communities also have a strong presence.

While Darwin is warm all year, it has two distinct seasons: the Wet (November to April) and the Dry (May to October).
