Government Assistance

Businesses in Australia's Northern Territory receive the support and assistance of the Northern Territory Government in a variety of ways.

The Government targets its spending and programs strategically to support industry sectors. Recent initiatives include:

  • Tourism - the Northern Territory Government has allocated an extra $27.5 million over three years to the tourism industry, including an additional $10 million in 2004-05 and 2005-06 for international and domestic tourism marketing activities and tourism development.
  • Manufacturing - the Northern Territory Government released Making it in the Territory, the Northern Territory Manufacturing Industry Strategy for 2004 to 2009, which aims to increase the value of manufacturing turnover by 40 per cent, increase manufacturing employment by 25 per cent and increase the value of manufacturing industry international exports from the Northern Territory by 40 per cent in 2009.

The Northern Territory Government also supports small business in the Northern Territory through:

  • Participation in business and skilled, regional and sponsored migration programs
  • Facilitation of exploratory visits by overseas business people including assistance with obtaining visas
  • Funding for small businesses to develop strategic business plans
  • Business skills short courses
  • Workshops and business mentoring
  • Promotional activities such as October Business Month, Youth Desk, women in Business and information campaigns
  • Client consultations and visits for new and expanding businesses and for businesses relocating to the Northern Territory
  • The Industry Development Grant Scheme
  • Northern Territory Food Group
  • Information on defence supply requirements
  • The Trade Support Scheme
  • Regional business development
