Skills Recognition and Other Services for Migrants
A range of services from government and non-government organisations are available for immigrants and refugees coming to the Northern Territory.
Office of Multicultural Affairs
The Northern Territory's Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA) aims to promote and facilitate mutual understanding and acceptance of cultural, racial, linguistic and religious diversity. It assists migrants to maximise their participation in the social, cultural and economic development of the Northern Territory. The OMA also supports overseas-trained professionals, para-professionals, technical, trade and other skilled workers to obtain recognition of their qualifications and skills. These services are available free to migrants with permanent residential status in Australia and people who hold work or student visas. Non-residents of Australia may also be assisted, although a fee may be charged.
Multicultural Council of the Northern Territory
The Multicultural Council of the Northern Territory is a community-based organisation managed by volunteers. It represents the needs, concerns and aspirations of people of immigrant and refugee backgrounds, and aims to enable them to participate fully in all areas of Australian society. The council is also a referral agency and a direct service provider. It provides tax assistance and free migration agent advice.
Department of Local Government and Housing
The Department of Local Government and Housing is responsible for the Northern Territory Interpreter and Translator Service which provides on-site interpreting and translating throughout the Northern Territory. The service has introduced an Interpreter Card that enables people from non-English speaking backgrounds to access Northern Territory Government services at no charge.
